THE SERIOUS STUFF ABOUT WORKPLACE STRESS

Workplace stress – the impact

Working conditions and environment can too often have a huge impact on mental health, and, subsequently, performance, output and job satisfaction.

  •  approximately 1 in 7 people experience mental health problems in the workplace

  •  women in full-time employment are nearly twice as likely to have a common mental health problem as full-time employed men

  • 1 in 5 people take a day off due to stress. Yet, 90% of these people cited a different reason for their absence

Poor mental health accounts for more than half of all work-related illnesses.

  •  around 51% of long term sick leave is due to stress, depression or anxiety

(Deloitte notes that 64% of managers have considered leaving their current role for a job that would offer better support for their wellbeing – while 70% of managers cited organisational barriers to supporting staff wellbeing, including company policy, heavy workload, unsupportive workplace culture, and not being equipped with the right skills.)

Addressing stress and anxiety in the workplace is crucial for promoting employee well-being and maintaining a healthy, productive work environment. Implementing simple and accessible strategies such as Mindfulness training can help to mitigate the impact of stress and anxiety on both individuals and the organisation as a whole.

Mindfulness in the workplace: the benefits

The positive benefits of mindfulness in the workplace include:

Mindfulness practices, such as meditation and deep breathing exercises, can help employees manage stress more effectively. This, in turn, can lead to increased overall well-being and improved mental health.

Mindfulness enhances cognitive abilities, including attention and concentration. Employees who practice mindfulness regularly may experience improved focus, leading to increased productivity and efficiency.

Mindfulness helps individuals become more aware of their emotions and reactions. This heightened self-awareness can lead to better emotional regulation, reducing the likelihood of impulsive or reactive behavior in the workplace.

Mindfulness can stimulate creative thinking by fostering a non-judgmental and open-minded mindset. Employees may find it easier to generate innovative ideas and solutions when they approach challenges with a clear and present mind.

Mindfulness encourages thoughtful and deliberate decision-making. By being fully present and aware of the situation, employees are less likely to make impulsive or rash decisions.

Mindfulness promotes active listening and better communication skills. Employees who practice mindfulness are more likely to fully engage in conversations, leading to clearer communication and a deeper understanding of colleagues’ perspectives.

When individuals are more present and focused, they are better able to collaborate with their team members. Mindfulness can improve interpersonal relationships and create a positive and supportive work environment.

Mindfulness can enhance individuals’ resilience in the face of challenges. Employees who practice mindfulness may bounce back more quickly from setbacks and adapt more effectively to change.

Mindfulness can help employees create a healthy balance between work and personal life. By being present in each moment, individuals may find it easier to switch between work and personal responsibilities without feeling overwhelmed.

When mindfulness is embraced at all levels of an organization, it can contribute to a positive and inclusive organizational culture. This can result in higher employee satisfaction, retention, and overall well-being.

Alan joined our weekly stand up on mental health awareness week and led an inspiring, nourishing, and inclusive mindfulness meditation.  The team really enjoyed it – we work hard as a small environmental charity and even though we have a great work culture, there’s always so much to do. The meditation helped to de-stress and align us for the day – would definitely recommend.
